One competency that falls within the Operational Law field is targeting. When we think of targeting we often think of intelligence garner and wanted individuals. One subset of targeting that essential be considered is lawful targets and verifying damage.



As we get by in Southwest Asia we must understand that there are areas within these countries that are considered sacred by its local nationals and leaders. Things that we must take into consideration are where we fight as well as areas around targets for which we call for air support. Cemeteries, mosques, churches, historical places, and hospitals to name a few are areas that we must be careful as damage to them will sure enough cause unrest within the local population. It is not to submit that there are not exceptions to this rule such as if these structures are not being used for their intended purpose, but we must ensure that as a Sergeant Major, we ensure our leaders are competent in the task of targeting.
