One instance of how Grendel is misunderstood as a monster is by his first encounter with humans. After he accidently gets trapped in a guide, he is discovered by a group of thanes out on patrol. They had no liking what Grendel is and are cautious of him. At first, they assumed he was a tree spirit of some sort who was killing the tree because he was empty so they wanted to get nutriment for him. Without realizing it, he laughed at the foolish humans thought, which caused them to obturate and become even much cautious of him. They all began yelling at each other .
One of the horses neighed and reared up, and for some crazy apprehension they took it for a sign. The king snatched an ax from the man beside him and, without any warning, he hurled it at me. This is when Grendel tried to communicate with them but the humans became more scared. Grendel, of course had no intention to kill or scathe these men even though it would have been an easy projection for him. The drunken men, misunderstanding this creature, try to kill him but he manages to escape into the night.
Another example of how Grendel is misunderstood is when he is walking through the forest, in harmony, unlike a blood hungry beast as he is seen in Beowulf.
