Flannery OConnor is best known for her shock and idolatry factor that is very frequently found in her writing. She does not stray from nor avoid the grotesque, terrible, even the gruesome in numerous of her short stories. This can be found for example in her story A Good Man is Hard to picture where the Misfit and his henchmen brutally murder the family that is attempting to go on vacation. OConnor makes no exception in her story A Temple of the sanctum Ghost where there are subjects visited that most people in particular at her time would shy away from or fawn at. One of the main themes and episodes in this short story is the set upon with the hermaphrodite. A subject not often written closely or would be expected to be heard from, particularly a catholic writer. But the hermaphrodite is not estimable a brief, unimportant part of the tale but quite a a focal point, and it affects the main sheaths heavily.
This short story is told, essentially through the eyes of a young girl who interestingly is never named but rather is referred to simply as the child.
She is with her devil older cousins throughout the story who we, as readers, feel as if we birth to know fairly well. But in regards to the child, she sash more foreign; more of a mysterious character that we never really get to know but or else get to see the events unfold through her young eyes. She at times seems somewhat innocent and a good character, and at others an awful mean spirited one. The child decided, after observing them a few hours, that they were practically morons and she was glad to think that they were entirely second cousins and she couldnt have inherited any of their stupidity.
