Using stolen keys and armed with automatic weapons, the eight gunmen entered the apartment and proceeded to wreak havoc on the inhabitants. Comprised of Palestinian members traffic themselves Black September, the gunmen targeted the Israeli Olympic team and, after killing two, ended up capturing nine. Demands were made, the activists began negotiations with the Israeli government, insisting that 234 Palestinian prisoners be released from Israeli clutch and be given safe custody to Egypt. Their demands were not met. It was 12 hours after the first athletes had been killed that the International Olympic Committee forced a suspension to the games. What ensued became widely recognise as the worst tragedy in Modern Olympic History. After intense negotiations the scene was moved to a near NATO airbase. The Palestinians, being led to believe their demands were being met, had boarded two phalanx helicopters and flown to the airbase.

There, a cunning trap had been set in model consisting of strategically placed German snipers, and a crew of under-cover German police officers hiding inside the plane that would supposedly back away them to Egypt. After the gunmen landed and began to pile out of the helicopters, the German police, believe that there would be only three gunmen as foreign to eight, aborted their plan and retreated. This left the remaining five snipers as the furbish up hope for ending the conflict right then. Pandemonium ensued. After realizing they had been lead into a trap, the Palestinian gunmen proceeded to open fire on the helicopter that still held Israeli prisoners.
